Kamilah Barrett has studied musical theatre and dance since the tender age of four performing in annual Christmas plays, musical productions, and heavy intensive summer workshops with Alvin Ailey and the Dance Theatre of Harlem. After graduating from her performing arts high school, she was accepted into Towson State University’s Theatre/Dance program.
Kamilah’s mother, accomplished songwriter Vinnie Barrett, worked with R&B icons Gamble and Huff, founders of Philadelphia International Sound. She penned such hits as “Sideshow,” “Love Won’t Let Me Wait,” and “Just Don’t Wanna Be Lonely.” Vinnie encouraged her daughter to follow her singing talents resulting in a recording contract with Artist Direct Records/BMG.
Ms. Barrett relocated to Los Angeles where she continues to follow her original passion, dance. Kamilah was a top finalist on Fox’s hit show “So You Think You Can Dance.” From there she performed along side Prince, Kanye West, Wyclef Jean, R. Kelly, 50 Cent, Jay Z, Cedric The Entertainer’s HBO special “Taking You Higher,” and a European tour with Missy Elliott. She has created and trademarked her own dance technique, HEEL HOP, hip hop in heels. She has taught her workshops in Tokyo, Moscow, Palm Springs, and her residency at Los Angeles EDGE Performing Arts Center.
Studying under the tutelage of renowned acting coaches Ivanna Chubbuck and Richard Lyons, Kamilah has graced the small screen with stints on “The Steve Harvey Show,” NBC’s “Homicide,America’s Most Wanted,” and “Unsolved Mysteries,” WB’s “All of U” while currently featured on MTV’s hit show “MADE.” She co-starred with Reuben Studdard on the touring play “Heaven I Need A Hug” as the character “Satana” and reprises her role January 2010 along side Dave Hollister.
